Software Engineer - Full Stack

About us

WeaveGrid builds software to make it cheaper and safer for utilities to serve electric vehicles, add renewable energy resources, and save customers money. Our mission is to drive rapid decarbonization in the global transport and power sectors by intelligently connecting electric vehicles to the grid.

We are currently in market with early utility clients, and we must rapidly build and deliver product improvements to serve existing customers and win new deals from our deep pipeline. As a rapidly growing company, we are building a thoughtful, capable team that can adapt with our rapidly evolving circumstances.

Industry context

We are living through historic changes in the ways people use transportation — a sector that is now one of the largest and fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions.

Electric vehicle (EV) sales are growing at over 60% a year, with vehicle manufacturers spending billions to get ready for an electric future. Boston Consulting Group estimates EVs will account for over half of all vehicle sales by 2030. Electric utilities see massive opportunities in this transformation, as the rise of EVs could drive more growth in energy demand over the next 10 years than any decade since the 1950s.

‍Larger EV fleets can also help support renewable energy sources on the grid. But to accommodate growth in EVs, utilities will need to make substantial investments in infrastructure and technology. Weave Grid's software helps meet the challenge of our transition to electrified transport.

Culture and mission

Beyond your core skills and track record, you are someone who will expand the culture and cumulative wisdom of the team as a whole. This can take many forms - relevant past projects, hard-won perspective from personal history, an unusual or adjacent skillset, a motivating passion, and so on. We are whole individuals, not just functional role-fillers, and we value everything that you can bring to the team.

Finally, you should be strongly motivated by Weave Grid’s mission. Energy and transportation expertise are not necessary, but it is important that you are passionate about tackling the climate crisis head on, by improving societal and environmental health.

Compensation and location

We are looking to fill this position as soon as possible. Compensation will include competitive salary, equity, and benefits. Weave Grid is based in San Francisco but is open to considering remote candidates in the US for some roles.

About Us

At WeaveGrid, we are working to accelerate transportation electrification and grid decarbonization. We need to enroll, retain, and shape the behavior of electric vehicle (EV) drivers in our utility clients’ programs.

This means you will be writing Python, SQL, HTML/CSS, and JavaScript for applications to support vehicle-grid integration and increase the amount of renewable energy used to charge electric vehicles. No previous experience in the energy sector is required.

About the job

You will collaborate with your engineering, design, and product peers to build features for our Driver and/or Utility Application.  In this role, we will ask you to:

  • Design and implement features end-to-end across our technology stack.
  • Contribute to architecture that supports SaaS-ification of our driver-facing and utility-facing applications, allowing for easy white-labeling and deployment to new utility customers.
  • Test your code to ensure completeness and correctness.
  • Participate in data-informed discussions to prioritize what problems we solve next and how we solve them.
  • Work with Product and Client Success partners to launch end-user features you help build.
  • Grow your engineering skills and help others on the team do the same by participating in design reviews and code reviews.
  • Work with our Python/Flask backend, JavaScript/TypeScript & React based frontend, (mostly) relational database schema, and microservice architecture.
  • Use Kubernetes, AWS, GitHub, Jira/Confluence, CircleCI, though experience here is not necessary.

About you

  • You want to apply your talents to meaningfully address climate change.
  • You’re excited to work from home, and are available to meet with team members during reasonable local working hours.  If local to the Bay Area, you are excited about an optional office and a flexible office schedule
  • You like to use different technologies to solve different types of problems and do not hold your engineering identity within one technology.
  • You have experience working in an object-oriented programming language - Python preferred.
  • You are comfortable working within a microservice based architecture and have experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or other microservice technologies.
  • You’re comfortable working in common JavaScript frameworks like React, but also understand web fundamentals and choose your packages judiciously.
  • You understand Agile software development, DevOps practices, and the meaning of quality assurance.
  • You are excited to help us build this growing company and have experience working on smaller teams or at smaller companies.
  • You care about user experience, the craft of software, and constant learning.

About the process

  • Apply, and send us your resume/CV (we’ll do our best to reply within a week).
  • Complete a coding assessment demonstrating your abilities as a full stack engineer OR hop on a video call and complete a similar coding problem with one of our engineers collaboratively in real time.
  • Interview with two small panels, spanning a variety of engineers and managers at Weavegrid.
  • Final interview with the Co-founders.
