Lead Engineer, Utilities

About us

Weave Grid builds software to make it cheaper and safer for utilities to serve electric vehicles, add renewable energy resources, and save customers money. Our mission is to drive rapid decarbonization in the global transport and power sectors by intelligently connecting electric vehicles to the grid.

We are currently in market with early utility clients, and we must rapidly build and deliver product improvements to serve existing customers and win new deals from our deep pipeline. As a rapidly growing company, we are building a thoughtful, capable team that can adapt with our rapidly evolving circumstances.

Industry context

We are living through historic changes in the ways people use transportation — a sector that is now one of the largest and fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions.

Electric vehicle (EV) sales are growing at over 60% a year, with vehicle manufacturers spending billions to get ready for an electric future. Boston Consulting Group estimates EVs will account for over half of all vehicle sales by 2030. Electric utilities see massive opportunities in this transformation, as the rise of EVs could drive more growth in energy demand over the next 10 years than any decade since the 1950s.

‍Larger EV fleets can also help support renewable energy sources on the grid. But to accommodate growth in EVs, utilities will need to make substantial investments in infrastructure and technology. Weave Grid's software helps meet the challenge of our transition to electrified transport.

Job description

WeaveGrid’s Utility Solutions team is responsible for developing and delivering software services to our core customers, electric utilities. As the lead engineer for this team, you will have a key role in collecting specific technical requirements for these products, choosing the technologies and approaches to developing them, and performing some of this software engineering yourself.

As the team grows – which is a certainty in the near future – the role might evolve into either a focus on engineering management or a senior IC position. This will depend on the strengths and preferences of the individual.

This role will
Work closely with solutions architect and integration engineers to understand recurring customer needs
Perform customer-specific integrations in order to understand first hand the requirements that should be productized
Develop technical specifications for productized functionality
Design and implement some aspects of utility-facing products
Lead the work of other engineers on the Utility team as it grows

About You

We are looking for someone who is equally interested in the human and technical aspects of software engineering. You are comfortable as a hands-on tech lead, and you move easily from planning and technical discussions to coding. You have probably worn a few different hats over the years, and you have a range of experiences to draw from.

You enjoy gathering requirements and priorities directly from enterprise customers and partners, as well as turning those needs into reliable and performant software. You are also highly collaborative, someone who is happiest when working alongside other engineers, as well as salespeople, designers, data analysts, and program managers to deliver valuable solutions.

You probably view yourself as a generalist who is comfortable with a range of technologies, and who enjoys working with specialists and experts in service of specific goals. You like clean code, and you know it when you see it, but you value solving real problems over specific technologies.

It is likely that you have some experience in the electric energy sector, such that you are familiar with the data that lies at the heart of electric utilities - AMI readings, wholesale prices, rate schedules and so on. While maybe not be the focus of your career, you bring working familiarity with the sector that will help to guide your technical decisions.

At the end of the day, we are looking for an experienced software engineer who brings excellent people skills, sound technical judgment, and hands-on competence. This role demands a balance of these elements, as well as an “X-factor” that ties it all together.

To meet the needs of this role, you will bring
Preferred
Solid Python skills
Preferred
Familiarity with full stack development, including data visualization, web applications, databases, networking
Preferred
Experience leading agile software practices
Preferred
Working knowledge of core AWS data services, including S3, RDS, Dynamo
Preferred
Specific experience in data and ETL pipelines
Culture and Mission
Beyond your core skills and track record, you are someone who will expand the culture and cumulative wisdom of the team as a whole. This can take many forms - relevant past projects, hard-won perspective from personal history, an unusual or adjacent skillset, a motivating passion, and so on. We are whole individuals, not just functional role-fillers, and we value everything that you can bring to the team.
Finally, you should be strongly motivated by Weave Grid’s mission. Energy and transportation expertise are not necessary, but it is important that you are passionate about tackling the climate crisis head on, by improving societal and environmental health.

Compensation and Location

We are looking to fill this position as soon as possible. Compensation will include competitive salary, equity, and benefits. Weave Grid is based in San Francisco but is open to considering remote candidates in the US demonstrating the skills listed above.
